From the castle of 1105, you can still see today the crenellated door which gave access to the enclosure of the castle as well as the door of Bourgville, a little further.
Castle built between 2 rivers, the Deûme and the Cance, on a rocky outcrop, ideal strategic position. Built in 1105 by the Lord of Annonay Guigues 3rd Count of Albon. Since the Middle Ages, it dominates the city. It belonged to several families such as Roussillon, Lévis, Bourbon, Ventadour, Rohan Soubises, Lords of Annonay. These families did not live in the castle, but came there from time to time. Around him, there was a whole set of houses welcoming local notables in times of insecurity and nearby, the Porte de Bourgville, closed at night. After the Revolution, the castle belonged to bourgeois families of the city, Monneron, Seguin, Mignot. But it was falling into ruins, and a fire ended up demolishing it one night in August 1894. In 1909, a religious institution turned it into a college, "the Institute". The last sections of the remaining walls of the castle will be destroyed in 1967.
