Don Juan scandalizes. And Don Juan fascinates. What fascinates
It is his elegance, his verve, his insolence, his audacity, his
freedom. This is also what is scandalous, and we can only think of it
evil. This contradiction between the character's appeal and
the horror it can inspire, is the whole subject of the play. For the
character questions us, stirs us, violently calls us back into
question our values. He seduces, behaves like a rebel, disobeys,
lives like a prince a life of love and impiety, and plunges
in rebellion with drunkenness and voluptuousness. Don Juan charms and
enchants… He is freedom-loving, he is joyful, he plays with the
life. It makes us dream of an imaginary life, an imaginary life.
It captivates us and creates a disturbing attraction. But it
appears as cruel, deceitful and manipulative! Is Don Juan
an absolute lover or a merciless seducer?
