Forests in North Ardèche

The Ardèche Verte region lives up to its name, thanks in part to its many wooded areas. From the pine and beech forests to the larches of the Lalouvesc plateau, from the gentle wild hazelnut trees and hornbeams bordering the Cance River, to the majestic cedars of Notre-Dame-d'Ay, the trees are a joy to explore.

Do you know them all? The forest stretches through the forest, and you'll encounter a multitude of individuals, some of which are more than a century or two old, in the case of certain chestnut trees. Each has its own names and virtues. The species that grow in Ardèche are often linked to the region's cultural and economic history.

So what is this tree that hides the forest?

You'll have the opportunity to learn more by visiting the Grandbeau Forest in Saint-Alban-d'Ay. Located in the Sensitive Natural Area of the Upper Cance and Ay Valleys, the Grandbeau Forest was devastated by the 1999 storm before being reborn and redeveloped for public use.

There is a plantation of old varieties of fruit trees as well as an educational beehive. The forest area is crossed by marked trails. Educational panels explain to visitors the history of the forest, geology, flora, and local fauna. In addition, you can discover the riparian forest (vegetation bordering aquatic environments) along the banks of the delightful Embrun stream.

The forest is designed for everyone and it is with this in mind that the panoramic trail (200 meters developed) has been made accessible to people with reduced mobility and is ideal for strollers.

Families and sports enthusiasts will enjoy the experience. The longer, steeper footpath will allow for a breath of nature and beautiful views, while picnic tables and benches will welcome children's snacks in the welcoming, pleasant shade in summer.
