For a day, come live with me a VIP visit to the Peaugres Safari, among wild animals. You will discover them under another facet!
The meeting is set in front of the Safari mansion. The guide introduces herself and explains the activity. The objective? Slip into the shoes of an animal caregiver. So, just like him, we put on the uniform and set off to discover the animal species of the Peaugres Safari.
The keeper's uniform gives the animals confidence and they are more easily approached. This habit thus reduces their fear and stress.
The first step is among the sea lions, for the discovery of a specific activity of the animal caregiver: medical training.
We enter a room facing the sea lion bay and approach a window, where we can see the sea lion bay in its entirety. From here, we see them much closer!
Two keepers train four sea lions. These exercises aim to create an environment where animals feel safe and comfortable during medical care. Examples ? Staying still, opening their mouth, presenting a fin, lying on their back... The sea lions then obtain rewards to encourage them to voluntarily cooperate during medical procedures.
Did you know ? The Safari de Peaugres stopped the sea lion representation shows because it went against their approaches and commitments to the protection of animals.
Sea lions are intelligent. If they don't want to do an exercise, they can disappear and sulk and come back later! Safari policy is that no animal keeper should force an animal to do anything it does not want to do.
Second stop among the penguins for the distribution of fish! Let's put on our gloves and feed this hungry little troop!
Direction the plot of the Californian port where we overlook the penguins. As soon as they see us, they rush into their ponds to eat the first fish distributed. Watching them swim in the water allows you to disconnect and appreciate this special moment. The guide gives us practical information about the species; notably the reasons for their disappearances, their swimming speed and their particularities…. After having feasted, the penguins return to sunbathe, satisfied.
Small passage to the strategic base of Safari of Peaugres : the animal restaurant! We meet the storekeeper and other keepers who prepare the rations for the animals. There are two cold rooms in the animal restaurant: the one for herbivores (pellets, vegetables, fruits, nuts, cereals) and the one for carnivores, inaccessible to visitors to avoid contamination on the meat.
The storekeeper reveals the guilty pleasures of primates, carnivores, giraffes and even elephants.
Contrary to popular belief, bananas are not monkeys' favorite fruit! I will leave you the surprise of discovering it during the visit…
Third stop in front of the mandrill park, on a balcony where you can see them up close. These impressive primates have a weakness for carrots and apples, they even fight among themselves to collect as many as possible. However, you must be careful not to create conflicts between the boss and the little ones!
Fourth step, direction the capybaras family! These giant guinea pigs feed mainly on fruits, vegetables, herbs, aquatic plants, cereals and bark. They are much calmer than mandrills and eat quietly. They make sure to leave enough so that the whole family can feed themselves, without arguing!
The fifth stage is among the mongooses. Today, they will have small croquettes made up of meat and proteins on the menu. Separated from them by an open window, we throw them these dishes that they love. After the distribution, they come up to the window and look at us with adorable eyes to ask for more, the greedy ones!
Despite their small size, mongooses do not fear snakes, such as cobras, for example. They will do their best to protect their colony, by fighting against the snake or by using their sharp cry which will scare it away.
Sixth step among the pretty otters. They are napping, huddled together and don't seem so hungry... We throw sardines at them to try to lure them out of their cabin. No need to even lift their paws, the prey falls within their reach so that they can easily bite them, before returning to the arms of Morpheus. It almost feels like a lazy person!
The last stop of the day is among the giraffes! The guide shows us a secret place, at the foot of the giraffes to feed them.
We give them a branch with leaves that they love. On the guide's advice, once the branch is in the giraffe's mouth, we release it so as not to be carried away by its force. And yes, they have a tongue of around 55 cm, tough beast!
Our group never tires of admiring the majesty of these ladies. After all, we will probably never have the opportunity to see it up close!
In addition to their meal, the giraffes enjoy fetching branches from the other side of the enclosure. Be careful not to get blocked by their long necks!
It's time to return our trainer's uniform following this VIP visit to the Safari. We thank the guide for this privileged visit and all her anecdotes. Fortunately, the discovery is not over since the VIP tour includes entrances to the Park. I will be able to take full advantage of the car and pedestrian circuits!
