Presentation

This bridge, listed as a Historic Monument and identically renovated in 2013, is one of the last works present highlighting the ingenuity of the inventor Marc Seguin.

The Moulin sur Cance suspension bridge restoration project was initiated in 2004 by the Syndicat des Trois Rivières. In addition to preserving and enhancing the "Seguin" heritage, this restoration also makes it possible to highlight the former industrial site of Moulin sur Cance, specialized in the production and processing of silk, but also to highlight the environment of the lower valley of the Cance, wild and remarkable, and part of a ZNIEFF, Zone of Faunistic and Floristic Ecological Interest.
The Moulin sur Cance suspension bridge, built between 1863 and 1865, is an authentic and rare witness to the techniques developed by Marc Seguin. It is today the only known work still retaining the technique of parallel iron wires, and it has been classified as a Historic Monument since 1981.
The bridge is 20 meters long and consists of 4 main parts:
The deck: the deck is made up of crosspieces and two floors. On the latter, two guardrails are installed and act as a stiffening beam to reduce the effects of undulation. The whole frame is in oak.
The masonry: imposing, the masonry is essentially made up of stones. It is designed to fully integrate the passage and fixing of cables.
The cables: four cables support the entire structure, two on each side. Each cable is over 38 meters long and weighs 256 kg. They are made of parallel soft iron wires. The principle lies in the fact that a cable is made up of a single iron wire that is ironed 100 times. These threads are held together by ligatures. The cables are anchored in the piles of the bridge by metal cylinders embedded in the masonry.
Lines: Lines use the same principle as cables, but are made up of fewer strands of wire. They split into two at their ends. The top loop is held to the cables by a "double stirrup" and the bottom loop supports the crosspieces.
