Presentation

Boulieu once housed a famous Ursuline convent whose chapel has been restored by the Compagnons du Patrimoine de Boulieu in recent years.

Catholic order founded in 1535 in Bresci, Italy, the Ursulines devote themselves to the education of young girls, it is also the first order of female education in the Church.
In 1635, at the request of the inhabitants, a convent of Ursuline nuns opened in the western suburb of the village of Boulieu. He also provided education for girls. Despite everything, during the Revolution, the building of the Convent of the Ursulines was confiscated and sold. A little later, in 1817, new buildings built with the help of the population allowed a return of the community. They included classrooms, a 15-bed hospice and weaving workshops which employed 8 people. The convent closed permanently in 1904. The old chapel was used as a theatre. Large buildings served as accommodation. But most of it was demolished in 1980, due to obsolescence.
