Presentation
Located on the foothills of the Pilat massif, in the heart of the Regional Natural Park, the village of Sainte-Croix-en-Jarez is located in a former Carthusian monastery whose different parts have been transformed into dwellings.
This surprising place hosted a community of monks following the rule of Saint Bruno for five centuries. In 1792, the Chartreuse became national property, the monks were expelled and gave way to families from the surrounding area. The monastery then becomes a village and retains a particular architecture which makes it original.
This remarkable site attracts many visitors, including many foreigners. It is classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France and can be visited all year round (guided tours recommended).
The village of Sainte-Croix-en-Jarez is in no way an empty monument, it is a living heritage.
